Zoox, the selfโ€‘driving company owned by Amazon, announced plans to roll out its autonomous vehicles in the coming months, targeting a debut in California before expanding nationwide. Uberโ€™s autonomousโ€‘vehicle arm, built on its recent purchase of Aurora and a $1.5โ€ฏbillion investment, is preparing to launch a fleet of driverless ridesharing cars in the same state. Both moves come as regulators ease rules on testing and as the industry pushes to prove that fully autonomous rides can be safe, efficient and profitable.

The shift matters because autonomous vehicles could reshape urban mobility. AI is now the core of every driverless system, from sensor fusion to realโ€‘time decision making. Governments are loosening restrictions on autonomous testing, and cities are looking for ways to cut congestion and emissions. Zooxโ€™s allโ€‘electric, purposeโ€‘built robotaxi and Uberโ€™s partnership with Aurora bring new technology to the market, promising cheaper rides and fewer accidents.

Zooxโ€™s vehicles are built from the ground up for automation, with a unique design that eliminates manual controls. The company plans to launch a pilot in San Francisco, where it already has a fleet of 200 vehicles on public roads. Uber, meanwhile, will deploy its autonomous cars in partnership with Auroraโ€™s software, using a fleet of 50 vehicles in Phoenix as a test bed. Both companies have secured funding of over $2โ€ฏbillion each in recent rounds, and regulators have granted them permits to operate without human drivers in limited zones.

The next step is regulatory approval and scaling. Zoox will expand from California to other states once its safety case passes the U.S. Department of Transportation. Uber will roll out its fleet in cities that approve its technology, aiming to launch a commercial service by the end of 2025. The success of these pilots could set a new standard for ridesharing, reduce the need for personal cars, and accelerate the transition to a fully autonomous transport ecosystem.
