Scientists have built swarms of tiny robots that can hunt down and remove microplastics from soil and water. The palm-sized machines use magnetic fields to move through liquid or damp earth, latch onto plastic fragments as small as 100 micrometers, and ferry them to collection points. Tests show each bot can grab and carry thousands of particles before needing to recharge.

Microplastics have become one of the planetโ€™s most stubborn pollutants. They come from car tires, synthetic fabrics, cosmetics, and the breakdown of larger plastic waste. Rain washes them from roads into rivers; wastewater plants let some slip through. Studies show they now turn up in Arctic ice, deep ocean trenches, and human blood. Traditional cleanup methodsโ€”sieves, skimmers, chemical flocculantsโ€”struggle with the smallest fragments or damage ecosystems in the process. That gap inspired the new robots: tiny, targeted, and gentle.

The bots are made from biodegradable polymers and magnetic nanoparticles. When a magnetic field is applied, they line up and move in formation, like schools of fish. In lab tests, a swarm of 100 robots cleared 88 percent of microplastics from a liter of water in just 30 minutes. Soil tests are next; researchers expect slightly slower uptake because particles cling to soil grains. Early estimates suggest a city-scale deployment could cost a few cents per ton of cleaned soil or waterโ€”cheaper than most industrial filters.

Next steps include shrinking the bots further so they can chase particles under 10 micrometers, and testing them in real rivers and farmland. If regulators approve, the robots could ride on drones or wastewater plant inflow pipes. The bigger goal: turn the tide before microplastics outnumber plankton in the ocean and seep into every food chain link.
