Spain imposes border checks on Italy over migration dispute

Spain and Italy have escalated a diplomatic row over migration after Madrid imposed temporary border checks on travelers from Italy, a move Rome called a “provocation” that breached EU rules. The checks began on Wednesday at ports and airports in Catalonia and the Balearic Islands in retaliation for Italy’s own controls on arrivals from Spain. Spain says the restrictions are a direct response to what it calls Italy’s failure to stop “persistent irregular migration,” pointing to a recent surge of people entering the Spanish North African enclave of Ceuta.

The dispute comes as both countries face pressure from rising migrant arrivals and growing frustration with EU-level solutions. Spain says most of the 3,500 people who entered Ceuta in a single day last week were swiftly returned under international law, but it accuses Italy of turning a blind eye to boats leaving its ports toward Spanish shores. Italy, which has taken in tens of thousands of asylum seekers in recent months, denies the charges and called Spain’s move disproportionate. The European Commission has stepped in to calm tensions, insisting the temporary checks do not threaten the Schengen zone and will have no long-term impact.

On the ground, travelers are already feeling the pinch. Ferry operators in the western Mediterranean say delays of up to four hours have been reported since the checks began, with extra police and border guards deployed at ports. A spokesperson for Italy’s interior ministry called the Spanish move “unilateral and unjustified,” while Spain’s foreign minister defended it as a necessary defense of national sovereignty. The latest figures show a 15% increase in irregular crossings into Spain from North Africa this year, with Italy seeing a 22% rise in arrivals from the Mediterranean.

The standoff risks deepening divisions in the EU just as it prepares to finalize a new migration and asylum pact. Analysts warn that tit-for-tat border controls could spread, undermining the free movement that underpins Europe’s single market. With both countries digging in, the European Commission is now pushing for emergency talks to prevent further escalation. The outcome could set a precedent for how the bloc handles future disputes over migration—and whether solidarity or sovereignty wins the day.
