Social Security delays COLA announcement for 2025

Social Security's COLA Announcement Was Delayed Last October. Will the Same Thing Happen Again This Year?

Social Securityโ€™s annual cost-of-living adjustment, or COLA, announcement could be delayed again this October, raising concerns among retirees who rely on the benefit boost to keep up with rising prices.

Last yearโ€™s COLA announcement was pushed back after a government shutdown delayed the release of key inflation data used to calculate the adjustment. The Bureau of Labor Statistics, which provides the Consumer Price Index for Urban Wage Earners and Clerical Workers (CPI-W), operates at reduced capacity during shutdowns, causing delays in data collection and reporting. While the Social Security Administration (SSA) is expected to announce the 2027 COLA on October 14โ€”matching the scheduled release of Septemberโ€™s CPI-Wโ€”thereโ€™s no guarantee it will happen on time. Senate leaders have reached a deal to keep the government funded through the 2026 midterm elections, reducing the risk of another shutdown. But political uncertainty always lingers.

Even if the COLA announcement is delayed, retirees shouldnโ€™t panic. The actual benefit increase typically arrives on time in January, regardless of when the SSA makes the official announcement. The COLA is based on third-quarter inflation data, and once itโ€™s calculated, the increase is applied to benefits automatically. However, the financial impact wonโ€™t be fully clear until Medicare premiums for 2027 are announced later in the fall. Seniors enrolled in both Social Security and Medicare often see their net benefit change once premium adjustments are factored in.

The stakes are high for the 67 million Americans receiving Social Security benefits. Without COLAs, retirees would steadily lose purchasing power as inflation erodes the value of fixed incomes. In recent years, COLAs have fluctuated widelyโ€”hitting 8.7% in 2023 before dropping to 3.2% in 2024 and 2025. A delay in the announcement wonโ€™t change the final amount, but it could create temporary uncertainty. Retirees are advised to monitor SSA updates closely and prepare for potential payment timing shifts, even if the adjustment itself remains on schedule.
