Serbia's government initiates parliament dissolution for early elections in October

Serbia’s government has initiated the process to dissolve parliament, paving the way for early elections expected to be held in late October. Prime Minister Djuro Macut made the announcement in Belgrade on Monday, a move seen as an effort to bolster President Aleksandar Vucic's grip on power following nearly two years of widespread anti-government protests.

The decision comes as parliamentary elections were not scheduled until December 2024. However, Vucic's recent actions and statements suggest he is keen to solidify his authority. The president, who has led the country for 12 years in various capacities, is reportedly positioning himself to transition back into the role of prime minister. The early election will serve as a critical test of Vucic's standing in Serbian politics amid a backdrop of public discontent.

The protests, which intensified following a tragic incident that claimed 16 lives due to a collapsing concrete canopy at a railway station in 2024, have galvanized opposition against Vucic. The student-led movement has made early elections a central demand, arguing that the government has failed to address issues of corruption, media freedom, and societal division. Macut noted the necessity of responding to public calls for change, stating, “A responsible government never ignores such demands.”

Vucic is expected to announce the exact election date soon, with the constitution requiring a campaign period of 45 to 60 days. The Serbian Progressive Party has already nominated him to run for prime minister. Meanwhile, the opposition continues to criticize Vucic for his administration’s alleged ties to organized crime and its failure to advance Serbia's bid to join the European Union, as he strengthens ties with Russia and China. The upcoming elections may reshape the political landscape in Serbia, particularly in light of recent controversies, including public tributes to war criminal Ratko Mladic.
