Russia releases American Stephen Hubbard amid U.S.-Russia diplomatic talks
Russia has released American Stephen Hubbard, who was jailed on mercenary charges, as part of diplomatic talks with U.S. special envoy Steve Witkoff regarding a potential peace framework for Ukraine.โฆ
Russian President Vladimir Putin announced on Wednesday that the United States citizen Stephen Hubbard would be released, handing him over to U.S. special envoy SteveโฏWitkoff at St.โฏPetersburgโs airport. Hubbard, a 45โyearโold former contractor, had been taken by Russian forces in early 2024 on charges of serving as a mercenary โ a claim he has repeatedly denied โ and sentenced to seven years in a closed trial. The release came as part of a broader diplomatic meeting between Putin and Witkoff, who was in Russia to discuss a possible peace framework for the war in Ukraine.
The timing of the release follows a direct request from President Donald Trump, who said he asked Putin to free Hubbard during a phone call last week. Trump later posted on his Truth Social platform that the United States did not have to offer anything in return, describing the move as โunprecedentedโ for Russia. He added that critics of his decision to pause a new round of sanctions had called to apologize, arguing that the sanctions would have stalled any peace negotiations. The Hubbard case has therefore become a symbolic gesture of goodwill toward the Trump administration amid talks on easing sanctions and restarting dialogue with Moscow.
Witkoff presented a set of ideas for a peace settlement, but Kremlin officials dismissed them as lacking substance. Nonetheless, Putin agreed โin principleโ to resume multilateral peace talks involving Russian, Ukrainian and U.S. delegates after Novemberโฏ10, focusing on a postโconflict security architecture for both sides. He also invited Witkoff to discuss restoring broader U.S.โRussia ties and hinted at a possible firstโever trilateral summit with Trump and Chinese President XiโฏJinping in Beijing. The Kremlinโs foreignโaffairs adviser, YuriโฏUshakov, said any future talks should build a lasting security system once the war ends.
The release of Hubbard was seen as a diplomatic olive branch as Ukraineโs President VolodymyrโฏZelenskyy, meeting Witkoff in Norway, called for a frontโline freeze as a first step toward a ceasefire. The European Union, represented at the Oslo talks, said it expects a debrief from Washington after the St.โฏPetersburg meeting. If the proposed talks move forward, they could reshape the warโs diplomatic landscape, offering a rare opening for negotiations after years of stalemate.
