Real Madrid will not sign Rodri this summer after all. The club has told Manchester City the deal is off, confirming what sources close to the talks had been saying for weeks. With the window closing, Real now faces a tough choice: make a big-money move elsewhere or trust its midfield to deliver another Champions League without a marquee signing.

The move matters because Real Madrid’s midfield has been the engine of its last two Champions League wins. Luka Modrić, 38, is slowing down. Toni Kroos retired in June. Eduardo Camavinga is versatile but unproven as a single pivot. Federico Valverde is brilliant but overstretched on the right. Without a natural replacement for Kroos or a true defensive midfielder to shield Rodri’s absence, Carlo Ancelotti’s system could look exposed next season.

Real’s alternative is to promote from within. Aurélien Tchouaméni, 24, has shown flashes but needs more consistency. Arda Güler, 19, is electric but still raw. Vinícius Júnior’s return to midfield experiments have been messy. If Rodri was the safety net Real wanted, now the club must rely on youth or gamble on a cheaper veteran like João Neves or Manuel Ugarte—players who can slide in but won’t be game-changers.

This decision leaves Real in a bind. Do they overpay for a midfielder now or gamble on development and hope Modrić’s magic lasts one more year? The squad is still stacked with attackers, but midfield depth decides Champions League finals. The next 10 days will show whether Real Madrid trusts its youngsters or pulls another big name out of the hat—before everyone else does.
