Rhaenyra Targaryen’s growing belief that she is the “Prince That Was Promised” in *House of the Dragon* now echoes Daenerys Targaryen’s arc in *Game of Thrones*, and showrunner Ryan Condal says that’s exactly the plan.

The connection isn’t accidental. Both women inherit a claim to the Iron Throne through their father’s line but face relentless challenges to their legitimacy. Rhaenyra, the firstborn child of King Viserys I, was named heir in 103 AC—long before the birth of her half-brother Aegon II. Yet patriarchal norms, male-dominated succession laws, and ambitious lords in Westeros repeatedly question her right to rule. Daenerys, similarly, was groomed as a future queen only to see her birthright stolen by her brother Viserys and later by the traditionalists who back Joffrey Baratheon, pushing her toward radical self-assertion and fire.

Condal told *Business Insider* that the parallel is deliberate: “Rhaenyra is discovering the prophecy meant for her, just as Daenerys did. It’s not about copying—it’s about destiny unraveling in the same family.” The show’s writers have woven Targaryen prophecies—like the one foretelling the birth of a “Song of Ice and Fire”—into Rhaenyra’s storyline, mirroring how Daenerys believed she was destined to break the wheel of tyranny. The current season escalates Rhaenyra’s conviction, with her embracing the title “Queen” and surrounding herself with loyalists who see her as the realm’s only hope. Her dragon Syrax, once her closest companion, now symbolizes her growing power—and her isolation.

What happens next could redefine the Targaryen dynasty’s future. If Rhaenyra fully embraces the prophecy, she may cross a moral line from claimant to conqueror, much like Daenerys did when she burned King’s Landing. The show’s second season is already positioning her for a possible civil war—the Dance of the Dragons—where fire and blood will decide who sits the Iron Throne. Condal hints that Rhaenyra’s path is leading toward a moment of irreversible choice. Whether she becomes a savior or a tyrant, her story suggests that in Westeros, prophecy often comes with a terrible price.
