Qatar brokers first direct US-Iran talks at UN

Qatar’s foreign ministry spokesman Majed al‑Ansari said on Tuesday that the country is determined to make diplomacy work to end the US‑Iran conflict after hosting the first meeting between the two sides in months on the sidelines of the UN General Assembly. The meeting was a low‑key, informal gathering of senior diplomats, with the US delegation led by a senior State Department official and the Iranian side represented by a senior diplomatic envoy. Qatar’s role as a neutral venue was highlighted by al‑Ansari, who urged that “we can’t let diplomacy fail” as the two nations continue to clash over sanctions, regional influence and nuclear ambitions.
