Researchers say pulsed radiofrequency magnetic fields may disorient migratory birds, according to experiments published Monday. The study found that birds exposed to these fields struggled to orient themselves during migration, suggesting artificial electromagnetic noise could disrupt natural navigation systems. The experiments were conducted in controlled settings with European robins, a species known for its long-distance migration across Europe and Africa.

Migratory birds rely on the Earthโ€™s magnetic field to navigate, using it like a compass to guide their journeys. This ability, called magnetoreception, helps them travel thousands of miles with remarkable precision. But human-made electromagnetic fieldsโ€”from power lines, radio towers, and wireless devicesโ€”are growing stronger and more widespread. Scientists have long suspected these fields might interfere with bird navigation, but direct evidence has been limited until now.

In the experiments, scientists exposed robins to weak pulsed radiofrequency magnetic fields similar to those emitted by modern wireless technologies.
