Aston Villa left‑back Lucas Digne has joined Paris Saint Germain on a three‑year contract, the Ligue 1 champions announced on Sunday. The 31‑year‑old defender will take the squad number 12 in Paris, following a transfer fee reported to be around £13 million. PSG confirmed the move on the club’s website, adding that Digne feels “very honoured to be returning to Paris Saint‑Germain.”

Digne’s switch comes after a six‑year spell in England that began at Everton, moved to Aston Villa in 2018, and ended with a return to his native France in 2024. He has been praised for his pace, crossing ability and work rate on the right flank. PSG, fresh from winning the Champions League last season, are looking to deepen their squad depth and add experience to the backline. The club’s manager, Christophe Galtier, said Digne’s defensive solidity and attacking threat would fit the team’s tactical plans. Villa, meanwhile, have been restructuring after a 12th‑place finish in the Premier League and will look to use the transfer fee to bring in new talent.

Digne said in a statement that he is “very honoured to be returning to Paris Saint‑Germain.” He praised the club’s ambition and expressed excitement about playing in the Champions League again. PSG’s sporting director, Jean‑Baptiste Douillard, highlighted that Digne’s versatility will allow the team to rotate the squad during the busy 2025‑26 season. Villa’s sporting director, David Long, said the club will use the proceeds to strengthen the squad for the next campaign, possibly targeting a young full‑back in the transfer market.

The move will be completed on the summer transfer deadline, with Digne expected to start training with PSG before the Ligue 1 fixtures begin in August. He will be eligible to play in the Champions League group stage, which could see him face some of Europe’s biggest clubs. For PSG, adding a seasoned defender with Premier League experience is a step toward maintaining their domestic dominance and extending their continental reach. For Digne, it is a chance to re‑establish himself in France and contribute to a club that has recently tasted European glory.
