Portland General Electric (PGE) reported weaker-than-expected second-quarter earnings for 2026, citing higher operational costs and slower-than-anticipated growth in its renewable energy projects. The Portland-based utility said adjusted earnings came in at 82 cents per share, down from 94 cents in the same quarter last year. Analysts had expected around 88 cents, according to a consensus compiled by The Motley Fool.

The drop reflects broader challenges in the energy sector, including rising fuel prices, supply chain delays for solar and wind equipment, and regulatory pressure to meet Oregonโ€™s aggressive decarbonization goals. PGE has been investing heavily in wind and solar farms across the state, but commissioning delays and higher-than-expected maintenance costs at aging gas plants have squeezed margins. The company also faces pushback from consumer advocates over proposed rate hikes to fund grid modernization.

During the earnings call, PGE CEO Maria Pope acknowledged the shortfall but said the long-term outlook remains strong. She pointed to a 12% increase in renewable capacity additions year-to-date despite delays and highlighted a new 100-megawatt battery storage project slated for completion in 2027. The utility also reaffirmed its dividend, raising the quarterly payout by 3% to $0.44 per share.

Investors appear divided. Shares dipped about 2% in after-hours trading following the release, though some analysts argue the stock remains undervalued given PGEโ€™s role in Oregonโ€™s clean energy transition. Next week, the Oregon Public Utility Commission will hold hearings on the companyโ€™s latest rate case, where outcomes could determine whether customers absorb more of the cost burden or if shareholders take a bigger hit. The decision may signal how aggressively the state prioritizes affordability versus decarbonization in the coming years.
