About 50 members of the US military’s Joint Staff have undergone polygraph tests as part of an investigation into unauthorized media leaks. This effort follows reports highlighting significant drops in US ammunition reserves, particularly regarding long-range missiles and Patriot air defense systems. The tests were conducted last month, according to a report by The New York Times.

The investigation has been prompted by growing concerns about national security amid ongoing military operations, particularly those involving Iran. In recent weeks, several media outlets published articles detailing the alarming state of US weapon supplies, despite Pentagon officials asserting that stockpiles remain adequate. This contradiction has sparked internal debates within the Defense Department about the future direction of military engagement.

Pentagon spokesperson Sean Parnell stated that the department considers leaks of classified information to be a serious issue and investigates them thoroughly. The Joint Staff, which comprises between 1,500 and 2,000 personnel, plays a crucial role in shaping operational strategies and policies related to military conflicts. Sources familiar with the inquiry suggest that the extensive nature of the polygraph testing is unprecedented, as high-ranking military officials have rarely faced such scrutiny in modern history.

The leaks have contributed to an atmosphere of distrust within the Pentagon, which some attribute to the leadership style of Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth. His management practices have reportedly led to the dismissal or blocking of promotions for over 80 senior military officials. The situation has intensified following the firing of the top editor and publisher of Stars and Stripes, an independent military news outlet, further highlighting the contentious climate surrounding military communications and operations.
