A Syrian court has sentenced ousted dictator Bashar al-Assad to death in absentia, convicting him of war crimes and crimes against humanity during the civil war. The ruling comes as part of an ongoing effort by Syria's interim government to hold officials from the Assad regime accountable for their actions.

Assad fled to Moscow with his family in December 2024, following the collapse of his regime, which had ruled for over five decades. The court's decision also included a death sentence for Atef Najib, Assad's cousin and former head of political security in Deraa province, where protests against Assad began in 2011. Najib, who was present in court, faced charges of murder, torture leading to death, and the intentional killing of children under 15.

The civil war, ignited by the violent suppression of peaceful protests, has resulted in the deaths of hundreds of thousands and the displacement of millions. The interim government began trials for former regime officials earlier this year, with Najib being one of the highest-ranking figures to face justice. This trial marks a significant step, as previous attempts by opposition figures to prosecute Assad in Western courts had failed to yield convictions.

While the court's ruling raises questions about the prospects of extraditing Assad from Russia, it underscores the new government's intention to confront the legacy of the Assad regime. The ongoing pursuit of justice for victims of the civil war is seen as crucial, though challenges remain as many senior officials from the old regime remain beyond reach.
