Tesla has announced that its forthcoming Cybercab robotaxi will not allow passengers under 13 to ride, even if accompanied by a parent. The move, revealed in a brief statement from Teslaโ€™s policy team, marks a stricter rule than the companyโ€™s current Modelโ€ฏY robotaxi service, which had permitted children aged 13 and under to ride with an adult. The announcement came during a press briefing in Palo Alto on Tuesday, as Tesla prepares to roll out its Cybercab fleet in select U.S. cities later this year.

The new restriction reflects growing concerns about child safety in autonomous vehicles. In the past two years, regulators have tightened rules on driverless fleets, citing incidents where toddlers and schoolchildren were caught in vehicles that failed to detect or respond to them. Teslaโ€™s own safety reports show a higher rate of nearโ€‘misses involving young passengers in its robotaxis, prompting the company to reassess its age policy. The decision also aligns with a broader industry trend, where firms like Waymo and Cruise have set stricter age limits for their robotaxi programs.

What led to the change was a combination of internal data and external pressure. Teslaโ€™s safety team flagged a series of nearโ€‘accidents involving children under 13 in the Modelโ€ฏY robotaxi test fleet, sparking calls from consumer safety groups for tighter age limits. The company also faced scrutiny from the California Department of Motor Vehicles, which has been reviewing autonomous vehicle protocols. In response, Tesla tightened its policy for the Cybercab, citing a โ€œcommitment to the highest safety standardsโ€ and a desire to avoid any regulatory setbacks that could delay the Cybercabโ€™s commercial launch.

Next steps will see Tesla submit the updated policy to the relevant state and federal agencies for approval. The company plans to begin a pilot program in Austin, Texas, in late 2024, with a full rollout scheduled for 2025. If regulators approve, the age restriction could set a new industry benchmark, pushing other robotaxi operators to adopt similar rules. The policy change also underscores Teslaโ€™s broader strategy to differentiate its autonomous fleet from traditional ridesharing services, positioning the Cybercab as a safer, familyโ€‘friendly option for urban commuters.
