New Mexico sues Justice Department for blocking Epstein investigation documents

New Mexico has filed a lawsuit against the U.S. Department of Justice, alleging that the agency is obstructing the state’s investigation into convicted sex offender Jeffrey Epstein. The lawsuit was announced on Wednesday by New Mexico Attorney General Raul Torrez, who accused the Department of Justice of “stonewalling” and unlawfully withholding critical unredacted documents connected to Epstein’s activities at Zorro Ranch, a property he owned in the state.

This legal action highlights ongoing tensions between Torrez, a Democrat, and the Republican administration led by former President Donald Trump. The conflict has been brewing for months. In early July, Torrez publicly expressed his frustration with the Justice Department, asserting that despite earlier promises of cooperation, the agency had yet to provide the necessary documents. He emphasized how this delay is negatively impacting the state’s efforts to identify victims and witnesses, thereby hindering justice for those affected by Epstein’s alleged crimes.

The Department of Justice has defended its stance, claiming that privacy laws restrict its ability to release sensitive materials. In a statement, the agency questioned whether Torrez was suggesting that it should violate federal law to meet the state’s demands. Epstein’s connection to Zorro Ranch has long been under scrutiny, with allegations of a sex-trafficking ring dating back to his ownership of the property from 1993 until his death in 2019. Survivors and advocates have raised concerns about potential crimes that took place there, adding urgency to New Mexico’s investigation.

The lawsuit brings renewed attention to the complexities of the Epstein case and the challenges state authorities face in pursuing leads amid federal restrictions. New Mexico first opened its investigation into Zorro Ranch in February 2019. However, after Epstein's arrest on sex trafficking charges that July, the Justice Department requested that New Mexico pause its inquiry and funnel information to federal investigators. Epstein died in jail later that month, complicating ongoing investigations.
