Researchers in Japan have created a natural insecticide that uses compounds found in garlic and spearmint to kill bean beetles without the environmental harm of synthetic chemicals. A team at Kyushu University found that diallyl disulfide and carvone โ the active compounds in garlic and spearmint โ disrupt the beetlesโ nervous systems and respiration when applied in lab tests. Field trials on legume crops showed the spray killed up to 90 percent of bean beetles within 48 hours, with no damage to the plants.
Bean beetles are a global pest that destroys crops like soybeans and mung beans, costing farmers millions each year. Many growers rely on synthetic pyrethroids and neonicotinoids, which can linger in soil, poison pollinators, and breed resistant pests. The push for greener farming has intensified as regulations tighten and consumers demand residue-free food. Garlic and spearmint extracts have long been used in traditional medicine and pest control, but this is the first time scientists combined the two into a stable, fast-acting formula.
The team tested different concentrations and found 200 milligrams per liter was the sweet spot โ effective against beetles but safe for ladybugs and honeybees. Their data, published in the Journal of Pest Science, showed the sprayโs effect lasted about a week before breaking down naturally. That short window is a plus for farmers who want to rotate treatments and avoid resistance.
Next, the researchers plan to scale up production and seek regulatory approval in Japan and the U.S. Theyโre also tweaking the blend to target other pests like aphids and whiteflies. If approved, the insecticide could give organic farmers a new tool and cut chemical use on conventional farms โ a small step toward safer, more sustainable food systems.
