NASA modifies 737 aircraft to simulate lunar gravity for Artemis training

NASAโs 737 aircraft was painted this week in Oklahoma as it progresses with modifications for use as a reducedโgravity test aircraft for the agency. The new paint job covers the planeโs fuselage and tail, marking the start of a series of upgrades that will allow the jet to perform lunarโgravity parabolic flights. The aircraft, transferred from the United States Air Force in June, is now under the ownership of NASAโs Armstrong Flight Research Center in Edwards, California.
NASA uses aircraft to create brief periods of microโgravity for training astronauts and testing equipment. The 737 will simulate the conditions astronauts will experience on the Moon, where gravity is oneโthird of Earthโs. The planeโs modifications will include a new parabolic flight system that can generate lunarโgravity levels, upgraded avionics, and safety equipment for the crew and payloads. After the first test flights, NASA plans to incorporate the 737 into the Artemis training pipeline.
