Madonna mourns William Orbit, her *Ray of Light* producer

Madonna has paid tribute to her longtime friend and acclaimed music producer William Orbit, who died at home last month at the age of 69.

The British producer, born William Wainwright, helped revive Madonna’s career in 1998 with the album *Ray of Light*, a genre-defying blend of electronic dance, ambient techno, pop, and trip-hop. The record won three Grammy Awards and is widely regarded as one of her finest works. Orbit’s family announced his death on July 23 with a statement expressing “profound sadness,” though they did not disclose a cause.

Madonna shared a heartfelt tribute on Instagram on Saturday, calling Orbit a creative force who unlocked new possibilities within her. “You pressed a magic button inside of me and I fell into a galaxy of unrealised dreams,” she wrote. “Your music gave me a magic carpet to fly on.” She described their studio sessions as “church-like,” where Orbit’s ideas would “explode” from his keyboard or guitar, inspiring her to sing and write in ways she never had before. Orbit also produced tracks for her 2000 album *Music* and 2012’s *MDNA*.

Beyond his work with Madonna, Orbit collaborated with Blur, Pink, and All Saints, leaving a lasting mark on both pop and rock. Madonna called him “so otherworldly, so singular,” and said she never forgot the “magical time” they spent together. “I was so lucky to have known you and fallen down the rabbit hole with you,” she wrote. His death comes nearly a month after he passed, but his influence on music remains undeniable.
