Brazilian President Luiz Inacio Lula da Silva holds a slim lead over right-wing Senator Flavio Bolsonaro ahead of the upcoming presidential election, according to a new poll released on Friday. The Quaest survey indicates Lula would receive 43 percent of the vote in a hypothetical run-off against Bolsonaro, who is projected to garner 40 percent. This margin is effectively a statistical tie, considering the poll's two-point margin of error.

The tightening race comes as Lula officially launched his re-election campaign on August 2, framing himself as a protector of Brazilian sovereignty amid increasing international pressures. Lula's lead has decreased from a previous Quaest poll in early August, which showed him five points ahead of Bolsonaro. In a first-round scenario, Lula is still in a stronger position with 38 percent support compared to Bolsonaro's 31 percent, while other candidates like Renan Santos and Ronaldo Caiado are polling at 4 percent, and Romeu Zema at 2 percent.

Flavio Bolsonaro, son of former President Jair Bolsonaro, has stepped into the political spotlight after his father's disqualification from the election due to a ruling that found him guilty of abusing his power while in office. This decision came alongside a separate conviction related to attempts to overturn the results of the 2022 election, which Lula won. The current poll demonstrates a competitive race as Lula seeks to solidify his base against the backdrop of a resurgent right-wing challenge.

As the election draws closer, Lula's campaign is emphasizing national security and economic independence. He has made clear his intention to protect Brazil's natural resources from foreign interests, particularly from countries like the United States and China. With the race tightening, the coming weeks will be crucial for both candidates as they seek to rally support and address the concerns of Brazilian voters.
