A local Reform UK Facebook page has faced backlash for criticizing Plaid Cymru minister Siân Gwenllian after she discussed a personal family tragedy in a recent newspaper interview. The comment, which suggested that Gwenllian was using her experience for "political gain," prompted swift condemnation from both her party and members of Reform UK.

Gwenllian, the housing and local government minister, has been open about her struggles as a single parent following the death of her husband, Dafydd, from cancer in 1999. In an interview with WalesOnline, she reflected on how this difficult period taught her empathy and resilience. The Reform UK Brycheiniog Tawe Nedd Facebook account, which identifies as the official page for the local party branch, made the controversial remark in response to the article, triggering a wave of criticism from various political figures.

Reform MSs James Evans and Iain McIntosh, who represent the Brycheiniog Tawe Nedd area, quickly distanced themselves from the comment. Evans labeled it "totally unacceptable" and stated that neither he nor the branch chairman were aware of the post until it garnered negative attention. He also highlighted that they are investigating the page’s administration to prevent future incidents. The comment was ultimately deleted, but not before drawing sharp rebukes from fellow politicians, including Plaid Cymru MS Beca Brown, who called it "vile."

The incident raises questions about accountability within party branches and the role of personal experiences in political discourse. A Plaid Cymru spokesperson demanded that the Reform UK Brycheiniog Tawe Nedd page reflect on its "disgusting comment," emphasizing that personal stories can foster connections between politicians and constituents. Evans' commitment to investigating the matter suggests that local Reform UK members are keen to address the fallout and uphold a more respectful political dialogue moving forward.
