Tuntivate, Rudel Win New Haven Road Race and USA 20k Titles

Kieran Tuntivate and Rachael Rudel took first place in the 2024 Faxon Law New Haven Road Race, earning the titles of USA 20‑kilometre national champions. The race ran on a flat, 20‑km course through the suburbs of New Haven, Connecticut, on Sunday, May 12, and drew more than 600 competitors from across the country.

The New Haven Road Race has been the de‑facto national championship for the 20‑km distance for the past five years. It is part of the United States Track and Field (USATF) 20‑K series, which offers athletes a clear path to international competition. Winning the race not only gives a national title but also secures a spot in the selection pool for the World Athletics Championships and the World 20‑K Championships. The event attracts elite runners, college athletes, and seasoned road racers, all hoping to break the 1:05 barrier.

Tuntivate finished the race in 1:02:12, the fastest time of the season for men in the 20‑km distance. He paced himself steadily, staying with the lead group until the final 5 kilometers, when he pulled away to finish 10 seconds ahead of the second‑place finisher. “I kept my eye on the clock and my stride,” he said. Rudel finished 1:09:41, a new personal best and the fastest time for a woman in the event that year. She described the day as “a perfect mix of wind and heat, but I stayed focused on the plan.” Organisers praised the competitive field and the smooth course, noting that the race’s timing system recorded every split accurately.

Both athletes will now be in the spotlight as USATF reviews performances for the 2025 World Athletics Championships in Osaka. Their victories also qualify them for the USATF 20‑K series final, where the top six finishers in each gender will receive automatic berths to the World 20‑K Championships. The New Haven Road Race will return next spring, and organisers are
