A billionaire-backed consortium led by Jeff Bezos and Facebook co-founder Eduardo Saverin is in advanced talks to buy up to a third of Liverpool Football Club. If completed, the deal would value the Premier League side at around £4 billion, making it one of the most expensive sports investments in history. The talks have reached a late stage, with financial backers and legal teams finalizing terms.

The move comes as Liverpool’s owners, the Fenway Sports Group (FSG), look to unlock capital for future growth while retaining control. FSG has been open to partial sales for years, but this deal suggests a shift in strategy as the club seeks new revenue streams beyond matchday income. Liverpool has long been seen as a commercial powerhouse, but inflation and rising costs have squeezed margins. A cash injection could fund stadium upgrades or player transfers.

The consortium includes both tech titans and private equity figures, blending Silicon Valley wealth with sports investment experience. Bezos, through his family office Bezos Expeditions, and Saverin, via his firm B Capital, bring deep pockets and global reach. Liverpool’s commercial revenue already outstrips many rivals, but a fresh injection could help close the gap with Manchester City and Real Madrid. Analysts estimate the deal could inject over £1 billion into the club’s coffers.

If agreed, the investment would mark one of the biggest shifts in football’s ownership landscape. Liverpool’s fanbase has mixed feelings about outside investors, but the club’s recent on-field success under Jürgen Klopp has softened resistance. The next step is finalizing valuation and governance terms, with a potential announcement expected within weeks. For Liverpool, it’s a chance to accelerate plans without ceding full control. For the buyers, it’s a high-profile trophy asset in a sport racing toward financialization.
