Norway firms cut Arctic satellite jamming 90%

Defense and technology firms held a joint exercise in northern Norway on Monday, testing systems designed to detect and mitigate satellite signal jamming that could disrupt aircraft, shipping lanes, and even global financial markets. The drill, dubbed “Jammertest,” ran through the week‑long Arctic training cycle at the Rorvik Naval Base, drawing teams from the United States, Canada, the United Kingdom, and several European defense contractors. Participants ran simulations that involved spoofing signals to a commercial GPS satellite and then using onboard receivers to isolate the true navigation data.

Satellite jamming has become a growing concern as more countries deploy anti‑satellite weapons and commercial space assets expand. In 2023 the U.S. Department of Defense warned that a single jamming event could cost airlines millions in rerouting and delay, while maritime shipping could suffer from navigation errors that threaten safety and cost. The Arctic, with its thin airspace and heavy reliance on satellite navigation for polar routes, is a strategic testing ground. Norway’s government has made the region a hub for NATO’s Arctic strategy, and the exercise aimed to validate new algorithms that can separate genuine signals from interference in real time.

The exercise involved over 200 personnel, 12 satellite links, and more than 30 hours of live jamming scenarios.
