Catania airport in Sicily has suspended all flights until at least 4 p.m. local time on Thursday due to fresh ash emissions from Mount Etna. The eruption poses a significant risk to aircraft, prompting regulators to restrict access to the airspace around eastern Sicily during this peak summer holiday season.

The decision to halt flights follows a series of volcanic activities that began last Friday, when renewed rumblings from Europeโ€™s most active volcano started to disperse ash across the region. The airspace was fully closed in recent days as the situation escalated. Catania airport, located just south of Mount Etna, has been a focal point for travel disruptions, forcing passengers to check flight statuses with their airlines amid ongoing uncertainty.

The impact of the eruption extends beyond Catania. Palermoโ€™s airport has seen a surge in traffic, accommodating around 190 flights that were redirected from the eastern side of the island. Meanwhile, Comiso airport, a smaller facility south of Catania, has resumed operations after suspending flights late on Tuesday. The volcanic ash has also drifted south towards Malta, where passengers have experienced significant delays and cancellations, although conditions are now reportedly improving.

Mount Etna, standing at about 3,400 meters (11,100 feet), is Italyโ€™s highest peak south of the Alps and is known for its near-constant low-level activity. Its eruptions have disrupted air travel multiple times in recent years. As a UNESCO World Heritage Site, Mount Etna has been a natural wonder for centuries, with its first volcanic activity dating back roughly half a million years, intertwining with local mythology as the forge of Vulcan or Hephaestus. The current situation highlights the ongoing challenges posed by this powerful natural landmark, particularly during a critical travel season.
