Gianni Infantino cannot have a future at FIFA, European Leagues president Claudius Schaefer has said, stressing the importance of reforming world football’s governing body and the responsibilities of its boss.

In an interview with The Athletic published on Wednesday, Schaefer said European Leagues, which represents 53 professional men’s and women’s football leagues, was deeply concerned about Infantino’s leadership.

“We question his suitability to continue as president. Here in Switzerland, we’ve had a close view of FIFA, and it seems that the influence of the president has grown from year to year,” he added.

“Major decisions are taken without meaningful consultation with stakeholders who will be affected.”

Schaefer’s comments come amid a bitter conflict among governing bodies, prompted by FIFA’s now-abandoned ‌proposal to sell off a slice of the World Cup’s commercial rights.

Infantino is under pressure from three confederations to resign, including Europe’s UEFA, Asia’s AFC and CONCACAF, which represents North and Central America and the Caribbean. The sport’s regional bodies have also discussed a potential vote of no confidence against the FIFA chief.

Concerns have been raised over the inaugural FIFA peace prize awarded to United States President Donald Trump in December and the overturning of a ban for USA forward Folarin Balogun during this year’s World Cup following a call from the Republican leader.

“FIFA is an association under Swiss law and in this association you have rules. The president and the board members have to perform their duties with care. This is a legal matter,” Schaefer said.
