Geopolitical Tensions Push Indian Shares Lower

Geopolitical tensions and Fed rate expectations pushed Indian shares lower. This shows global risks now outweighing mixed corporate earnings in driving market sentiment.

Indian Shares Marginally Lower In Lackluster Trade

Indian shares edged lower on Monday, as traders reacted to renewed worries about the Strait of Hormuz and the possibility that the U.S. Federal Reserve will keep rates unchanged next month. The benchmark BSE Sensex slipped 84 points to 78,414, while the NSE Nifty fell 26 points to 24,544, reflecting a cautious mood at the start of the trading day.

The marketโ€™s nervousness comes amid escalating tensions in the Persian Gulf, where shipping lanes through the Strait of Hormuzโ€” a critical route for global oil suppliesโ€” have faced disruptions. Investors are also watching U.S. monetary policy, with expectations that the Fed will hold rates steady in its next meeting. The combination of geopolitical risk and a potentially muted monetary stimulus has dampened sentiment, even as corporate earnings data began to surface.

Corporate results were mixed. State Bank of India fell 1.3โ€ฏ% after announcing a 10โ€ฏ% jump in its firstโ€‘quarter net profit, while Apollo Micro Systems fell 2.6โ€ฏ% despite a 42โ€ฏ% rise in quarterly profit. NLC India dropped 5โ€ฏ% on a 40โ€ฏ% decline in firstโ€‘quarter consolidated net profit, and Power Finance Corporation slid 3.6โ€ฏ% after reporting a modest profit increase. Ola Electric Mobility fell 1.4โ€ฏ% on a Q1 loss of Rsโ€ฏ336โ€ฏcrore. In contrast, Titan Company rose 2.1โ€ฏ% as its profit jumped 63โ€ฏ% yearโ€‘onโ€‘year, and Oil India surged 2.6โ€ฏ% after nearly doubling its Q1 consolidated net profit. Vodafone Idea and Hindustan Copper were slightly higher ahead of their earnings releases scheduled for later in the week.

The dayโ€™s downturn shows how global geopolitical developments can override domestic corporate performance. Market participants will look to next weekโ€™s U.S. Fed policy announcement for guidance, while the ongoing uncertainty in the Middle East could keep volatility high. Investors may also wait for the upcoming earnings from Vodafone Idea and Hindustan Copper to gauge whether the broader market will recover or stay subdued.
