Britain’s Cameron Norrie has been knocked out of the National Bank Open in Montreal after a straight-sets defeat by Arthur Fils. The world No 14 lost 6-2 7-6 (10-8) to the 20-year-old Frenchman in the last 16, ending his title defence one match short of the quarter-finals. Norrie, who reached a career-high No 8 in June, had not dropped a set in his first three matches but ran into a rising home favourite who produced 29 winners and 17 unforced errors to his opponent’s 16 and 20.

The defeat follows a tough summer swing for Norrie. After a strong clay-court season that included a Madrid semi-final, he struggled for consistency on hard courts, failing to advance past the second round at Wimbledon and Cincinnati. Fils, meanwhile, is riding a wave of momentum after winning his first ATP title in Lyon last month and climbing to No 33 in the rankings. His aggressive baseline game and improving court craft have made him a dangerous floater in the bottom half of draws.

Norrie will now drop outside the top 15 for the first time since April, while Fils moves on to face either Taylor Fritz or Gaël Monfils in the quarter-finals. The Frenchman’s victory adds to a growing list of upsets this season, where young players have dismantled higher-ranked opponents. Norrie, who turns 29 next week, will regroup for the US Open hard-court swing starting in two weeks, where he’ll look to rediscover the form that took him deep into Grand Slams earlier this year.

The loss also underscores a broader shift in men’s tennis, where the next generation is rapidly closing gaps to the established elite. Fils’ composure under pressure—especially in the second-set tie-break where he saved three set points—hinted at the mental resilience needed to challenge for bigger titles. For Norrie, the focus now shifts to consistency and finding a way past the early-round hurdles that have cost him points in recent weeks.
