‘How To Get To Heaven From Belfast’ cancelled at Netflix

The comedy-thriller How To Get To Heaven From Belfast has been cancelled by Netflix , who confirmed the show would not be getting a second season.

Released in February, the show followed three friends (Roisin Gallagher, Sinéad Keenan, Caoilfhionn Dunne) who travel to Donegal from Belfast to attend the funeral of the estranged fourth member of their friendship group. When they arrive, however, they discover mysteries behind her death that lead to them becoming amateur detectives.

The eight-part first season was well-reviewed, with 95 per cent on Rotten Tomatoes , and Broadcast Now reports that it drew an estimated 1.8million viewers in its first seven days of release, making the UK top ten. However, Netflix confirmed to the outlet that they would not be moving ahead with a second season.

The show was created by Lisa McGee, who created the hit show Derry Girls . At the time of writing, neither she nor any of the principle cast have commented on the cancellation.

Netflix has come under scrutiny over the years for the cancellation of well-received shows that fans felt needed more time to conclude their story. Fans of The Buroughs , a mystery show from the makers of Stranger Things , were irate after it was cancelled after just one season , while last year LGBTQ+ drama Boots was cancelled after the same amount of time, following backlash from the American government.

It’s one of many shows that have gained Netflix a reputation for cancelling series that aren’t immediately successful, however the streamer’s CEO Ted Sarandos defended the policy in 2023. “We have never cancelled a successful show,” Sarandos said during an interview with Bloomberg . “A lot of these shows were well-intended, but talk to a very small audience on a very big budget. The key to it is you have to be able to talk to a small audience on a small budget and a large audience at a large budget. If you do that well, you can do that forever.”
