Smartphone sales fall 5% as component costs hit budget market hard

Smartphone sales in the United States have declined significantly, with a new report revealing a 5% year-over-year drop in Q2 2026. The report from Counterpoint Research highlights that major brands like Apple, Google, Motorola, and Samsung have also experienced a 4% decrease in sales during the same period. This downturn coincides with rising component costs, driven by a global energy crisis and ongoing shortages, particularly in RAM, which are forcing manufacturers to either increase prices or exit the budget phone market.

The financial strain on consumers, exacerbated by the Middle East conflict, has led to reduced purchasing power, making it harder for people to buy new devices. The sub-$100 smartphone segment has been hit hardest, suffering a staggering 64% decline in sales year-over-year. Many manufacturers have either raised their prices or left this low-cost segment altogether, leaving the market vulnerable. Carrier-branded prepaid phones are also facing challenges, as rising component costs compel carriers to increase prices, narrowing the gap between budget offerings and mid-range devices from major brands.

Interestingly, despite the overall decline, low-end prepaid phones from Samsung and Motorola have gained market share. This shift is attributed to price increases from smaller companies that have struggled to compete. However, sales of prepaid devices still fell by 11% in Q2 2026. As consumers look for reliable options, carriers are increasingly focusing on Samsungโ€™s Galaxy A series and Motorolaโ€™s Moto G series, which have become the go-to choices in the mid-range and low-cost categories.

Looking ahead, Counterpoint predicts that the average selling price of smartphones will continue to rise. This trend is already evident with Googleโ€™s recently launched Pixel 11 series, which has seen a $100 increase compared to last year. Other flagship models, including Samsungโ€™s Galaxy Z Fold 8 Ultra, have followed suit with similar price hikes. Anticipation grows around the upcoming Apple iPhone 18, which is also expected to see a price bump. For consumers hoping for relief, it appears that higher prices may be the new norm for the foreseeable future.
