Google launches Pixel update with VIP widget and Wear OS enhancements
Google's latest update for Pixel devices enhances contact management, security, and the user experience with features like a VIP widget and expanded Scam Detection. It also introduces a Wear OS upgraโฆ
Google unveiled a bundle of new features for its Pixel lineup this month, aiming to make contact management easier, boost security, refresh the watch experience, and add a popโculture twist. The update rolls out to Pixelโฏ6 phones and newer, while the WearโฏOSโฏ7 upgrade arrives on all PixelโฏWatchโฏ5 devices. In the U.S., Canada, U.K., France, Germany, Italy, Spain, India, Japan, Australia, and a few other markets, users will also gain access to HarryโฏPotterโthemed wallpapers, icons, and sounds, plus two free months of Audible.
The changes come as Google tightens its focus on the Pixel ecosystem. After a period of slower hardware releases, the company wants to keep the line competitive with rivals that offer fast updates and robust security. By expanding ScamโฏDetection to more chat apps and adding inโapp alerts, Google is responding to growing concerns about phishing and spam. The new VIP widget lets users tap a contactโs name or picture from the home screen to call or text instantly, and a new badge shows whether a VIP message is urgent or unread.
On the watch side, WearโฏOSโฏ7 brings a more personal Gemini that works offline and sharper GPS route tracking. Gesture controls get a boost: a doubleโpinch from the watch face opens the notification centre, scrolls Gemini replies, scrolls Wallet cards, or flips between GoogleโฏMaps reviews. Turning the wrist still returns you to the previous screen. Meanwhile, the HarryโฏPotter packs let Pixel users swap out their phoneโs wallpaper, icons, and notification sounds for themes inspired by the new audiobooks. Eligible users in the supported countries receive two free months of Audible to try the service.
Users can install the software update through SettingsโฏโโฏSystemโฏโโฏAdvancedโฏโโฏSystemโฏUpdate for phones, and through the Wear app for the watch. The new features aim to make everyday interactions smoother, protect against fraud, and give the Pixel family a fresh look. As Google continues to iterate on its hardware and software, these updates signal a push to keep Pixel devices relevant and appealing to a broad audience.
