Gold ( GC=F ) may have gotten ahead of itself for now. It's pausing after rallying into a key technical level, getting stretched to the upside in the process.
SPDR Gold Shares ( GLD ) ripped higher from its July low, part of a broader gold breakout that is repairing much of the damage from earlier this year.
The bigger recovery still looks intact. The near-term setup is a different story.
GLD topped out near $496 earlier this year before sliding to a July closing low of about $365. Halfway between those two levels sits $430.
That is almost exactly where buyers ran out of gas on Monday.
GLD traded just short of that level Monday before opening lower Tuesday. The rally had also become technically overbought โ having traveled too far too fast โ giving sellers another reason to show up around a level that was already important on the chart.
Last week, the iShares Semiconductor ETF ( SOXX ) rallied almost exactly halfway back from its June-to-July plunge , hit resistance, and rolled over.
The next area to watch is around $415. That is near the 38.2% Fibonacci retracement of GLD's decline and also close to its 200-day moving average.
