Gaza City holds mass funeral for 112 victims of November Israeli attack

More than 100 Palestinians were buried in a mass funeral in Gaza City on Tuesday, following their recovery from the rubble of a deadly Israeli attack in November 2023. The ceremony honored the remains of 112 members of the Abu Sharia and al-Hasayna families, who had been trapped for nearly three years. Thousands of mourners attended the event, marking one of the largest funerals in Gaza since the onset of the current conflict.

The funeral comes in the wake of ongoing violence that has deeply affected Palestinian families. The November 22 attack in the Sabra neighborhood claimed the lives of 308 individuals from the two families, including 40 children and 30 women. Rescue teams recently unearthed the bodies, providing a long-awaited opportunity for families to hold funeral prayers and begin the grieving process. Palestinian officials report that around 157 individuals are still missing, potentially buried beneath the debris or unaccounted for.

The scale of the funeral reflects the immense human toll of the conflict. Coffins draped in Palestinian flags were paraded through the streets, accompanied by large banners featuring photographs of the deceased. Mahmoud Basal, a spokesman for the Palestinian Civil Defence, described the scene as "exceptional and painful," emphasizing the prolonged suffering of families who had waited years for closure. Activists and human rights advocates expressed their grief, with many viewing the event as a stark symbol of the ongoing tragedy faced by families still searching for loved ones.
