Samsung Galaxy S26 Ultra just became the best-selling Android phone globally in Q2 2026, while the regular Galaxy S26 also cracked the top 10. Now, Samsung has another phone that people apparently want more than it expected โ so much so that the company is reportedly dipping into component stock reserved for future production to keep the Galaxy Z Fold 8 coming.
According to ZDNet Korea , Samsung is running short of the Display Driver IC (DDI) used to control the pixels on the Galaxy Z Fold 8 OLED display. Samsung has reportedly increased its component orders after demand for the passport-style foldable exceeded expectations. But its DDI supplier, Taiwanโs United Microelectronics Corporation (UMC), has little room to ramp up production.
The Fold 8โs DDI is designed by Samsungโs System LSI division and manufactured by UMC using its 22-nanometer process. UMCโs capacity on that process is reportedly already at its limit because it is also producing other semiconductors. Samsung apparently asked for a โsuper hot run,โ an expedited production schedule, but UMC said accelerating output would be difficult.
That leaves Samsung looking backward โ or perhaps forward, depending on how you see it โ for more parts. An industry source told ZDNet Korea that Samsung plans to use DDI reserves originally secured for future development in current Fold 8 mass production. The report doesnโt clarify whether those reserves were extra components set aside for continued Fold 8 production into next year, or were intended for the Fold 8โs successor, presumably the Galaxy Z Fold 9.
Either way, Samsung canโt simply borrow DDIs from another Galaxy phone to fill the gap. Unlike general-purpose memory such as LPDDR, DDI chips are customized for specific displays, and Samsungโs three new foldables use different DDI specifications. That makes it difficult to redirect existing supply from one model to another when demand suddenly shifts.
And replacing that inventory wonโt happen overnight. ZDNet Korea says a normal production run takes around four months to turn wafers into finished DDI chips. Those chips then have to be paired with Samsung Displayโs OLED panels before the phones can be assembled.
Samsung is also increasing orders for Fold 8 hinges and ultra-thin glass (UTG) cover windows, another indication that demand is putting pressure on its supply chain. Interestingly, demand for the Galaxy Z Flip 8 is reportedly below expectations.
