The Tampa Bay Buccaneers may be without cornerback Jamel Dean in 2026 after a standout performance in training camp with his new team, the Minnesota Vikings.

Dean, 27, signed a three-year, $33 million deal with Minnesota in March after four seasons with Tampa Bay. He has quickly become a key piece of the Vikings’ revamped secondary, which is looking to bounce back from a tough 2023 season. The Bucs, meanwhile, are already thin at cornerback after losing Carlton Davis and Ryan Smith in free agency. Losing Dean would further strain their depth chart ahead of what’s expected to be a competitive NFC South race.

Dean’s arrival in Minnesota has drawn praise from coaches and teammates. Vikings defensive coordinator Brian Flores, who worked with Dean in Miami during Flores’ time as Dolphins head coach, has called him a “complete corner” with the size, speed, and instincts to excel in the scheme. Dean’s performance in camp has even drawn comparisons to his breakout 2022 season with Tampa Bay, when he recorded two interceptions and 10 passes defended. If he sustains that level of play, Minnesota could have one of the league’s best young cornerback duos alongside Pro Bowl selection Mekhi Blackmon.

The Bucs now face a tough decision. They could use the 2026 draft to find Dean’s replacement, but finding a corner of his caliber won’t be easy. Tampa Bay’s secondary was a strength last season, ranking sixth in pass defense, but much of that was tied to Dean’s ability to lock down opposing receivers. His departure would leave a void that might be hard to fill without significant investment. For Minnesota, Dean’s emergence provides immediate stability and raises expectations for a defense that’s aiming to contend in the NFC North. The Vikings’ early investment in Dean is already looking like a smart move, while Tampa Bay’s front office will need to act fast if they hope to avoid a major drop-off in 2026.
