The danger is rooted in a combination of extreme monsoon rains, rapid glacier melt and widespread landslides. In late September, heavy downpours triggered a series of slope failures that released large volumes of earth and rock into the Trishuli, Kali Gandaki and Koshi rivers. The debris clogged the channels, raising water levels and creating temporary dams. Climateโchange models predict that such intense rainfall events will become more common in the Himalayas, adding to the regionโs flood risk.
