Federal regulators have opened an inquiry into "mention markets" on prediction market platforms, where users place bets on what specific words public figures might use during speeches or broadcasts. This investigation, launched by the Commodity Futures Trading Commission (CFTC), follows a controversial incident involving President Trumpโ€™s teleprompter operator, who was reportedly profiting from betting on the President's statements. Multiple sources familiar with the situation have confirmed the probe to NPR on the condition of anonymity.

In response to the scrutiny, Kalshi, the largest prediction market in the United States, has removed all mention markets related to sports betting from its offerings. These markets allow users to wager on whether sportscasters will use particular terms during broadcasts, such as "MVP" or "redshirt." Although sports betting makes up over 80% of Kalshi's trading volume, the removal of these mention markets has created uncertainty about their future availability. Kalshi continues to facilitate wagers on word choices at political events and during earnings calls, but the suspension of sports-related mention markets could lead to significant losses in revenue.

The increased attention from federal regulators comes at a time when prediction markets are becoming more popular, raising concerns about their potential for manipulation. An insider noted that mention markets are not universally favored and could be easily exploited, prompting the CFTC to assess their legitimacy. Kalshi's internal systems flagged the operator's suspicious betting patterns, which they reported to authorities.

Kalshi's main competitor, Polymarket, also offers mention markets but only on its overseas platform, which operates outside CFTC regulations. In the U.S., Polymarket does not feature these types of bets. Most prediction markets are self-certified, allowing platforms to launch new markets after submitting paperwork confirming compliance with existing regulations. As the CFTC investigates the implications and legality of mention markets, the future of this betting category remains uncertain.
