Fed Governor Cook says she's 'prepared to act' on rate hike to address inflation

Federal Reserve Governor Lisa Cook announced on Wednesday that she is ready to support an interest rate hike unless inflation numbers show significant improvement. Speaking in Anchorage, Alaska, Cook emphasized the current inflation levels are too high and that she views the risks associated with inflation as more pressing than those tied to employment. "I am prepared to act by raising rates, if necessary," she stated.

Cook's comments come amid a backdrop of ongoing economic uncertainty. The Federal Reserve recently voted 9-3 to maintain its benchmark borrowing rate between 3.5% and 3.75%. While Cook acknowledged that inflation seemed to ease in June, largely due to a decline in energy prices, she cautioned against drawing too many conclusions from a single data point. Price increases remain significantly above the Fed's 2% target, and Cook is keenly aware of the broader economic factors influencing inflation, including the potential impacts of tariffs, geopolitical events like the Iran war, and developments in artificial intelligence.

Cook's remarks highlight a growing urgency within the Federal Reserve to address prolonged inflation, which has surpassed the target for over five years. She warned that if inflation remains elevated, it may become entrenched in wage and pricing behavior, making future interventions more challenging. "The longer inflation is above target, the more likely this scenario becomes," she noted.

Market analysts are closely monitoring the situation, with expectations that the Fed may raise rates as early as September or October. Minneapolis Fed President Neel Kashkari, who dissented in the recent vote, echoed Cook's sentiment, asserting that higher rates are necessary to combat inflation. The Fed's next moves will be critical in shaping economic conditions and influencing consumer sentiment in the coming months.
