Millions of students worldwide returned to school this month, but the rise of artificial intelligence is quietly reshaping how they learnโand what they actually remember. A new study tracking 27,000 Chinese students over two and a half years shows that while AI tools can slash homework time and boost grades, they leave real learning behind. After students started using generative AI, their homework scores jumped 18 percent, but the time they spent on assignments dropped by nearly a third. The catch? When tested without AI, their scores fell 20 percent within six months, with longer-term damage showing up in high-stakes entrance exams.
The problem isnโt that AI helps with homeworkโitโs that students are outsourcing thinking, not just typing. Research from Stockholm University and the University of Hong Kong found that AI makes schoolwork faster and easier, but the knowledge doesnโt stick. The Organisation for Economic Co-operation and Development reached the same conclusion in its 2026 Digital Education Outlook: when students use AI to do the work for them, grades may go up, but real learning doesnโt. Experts call this โmetacognitive lazinessโโa shortcut that saves time but weakens understanding.
How students use AI tools matters more than whether they use them at all. A survey of 7,000 European students aged 12 to 17 found that 56 percent use AI to find information, while 45 percent rely on it to explain concepts. But 31 percent admit using AI to generate full solutions to assignmentsโeffectively doing the thinking for them. Only 29 percent use AI for interactive or adaptive learning, and just 20 percent let it help create personalised study plans and track progress. The result? A generation that can finish homework faster but may struggle when the AI isnโt there.
Schools and governments are racing to catch up. China now requires at least eight hours of AI instruction per student each year, while countries like the UAE, Saudi Arabia, and Qatar are embedding AI into their school curricula. But without clear rules or structured use, AI risks turning into a crutch rather than a tool. The message is simple: AI can speed things up, but if students arenโt doing the thinking themselves, the long-term costs may outweigh the short-term gains.
