POLITICO released a new poll on June 15 that shows voters are still weighing electability heavily when choosing a candidate. The survey, which asked 2,000 Americans across the country, found that 52โ€ฏ% say electability is the most important factor, while 41โ€ฏ% say policy matters more. The data were collected just before the June primary season and are being watched by campaign teams nationwide.

Electability has become a buzzword in recent years, especially after the 2016 election when outsiders won the presidency. Voters grew tired of partisan fights and began looking for candidates who could win a general election. Candidates from both parties have used the term to appeal to moderates, and media coverage has focused on whether a candidate can unite a divided electorate. The poll was timed to capture that sentiment before the crowded field of the 2024 primaries opens.

The poll gives more detail on who cares about electability. Among Democrats, 58โ€ฏ% say electability matters, compared to 44โ€ฏ% of Republicans. Young voters (18โ€‘29) gave 47โ€ฏ% to electability, while older voters (65+) gave 59โ€ฏ%. The candidate most seen as electable was incumbent President Joe Biden, followed by former President Donald Trump. The data suggest that while policy remains a key concern, many voters are looking for a candidate who can win in a general election. Political analysts say the findings could explain why some candidates are shifting their messaging toward unity and competence rather than ideology.

Campaigns will likely use the poll to adjust their strategies. Candidates may highlight their experience and bipartisan appeal in debates and ads. The poll also signals that moderate swing voters will be decisive in the 2024 general election. After the primaries, another poll will track whether electability stays high on votersโ€™ minds or if policy issues rise to the top. The results give a snapshot of what matters to voters now and hint at how the next election cycle could unfold.
