Ebola deaths in eastern Congo now top 1,700, according to a government update released Tuesday. The outbreak, which began in late 2023, has reached 3,802 confirmed cases and 1,707 fatalities, giving a fatality rate of about 45 percent. The numbers come from the Democratic Republic of Congoโ€™s Ministry of Health and are confirmed by the World Health Organization. The outbreak is centred in North Kivu and Ituri provinces, regions that have long struggled with armed conflict, weak health systems and limited access to care.

The crisis matters because it is the largest Ebola outbreak in the country since the 1998โ€‘2000 epidemic and the third largest worldwide. The virus spread rapidly through villages that lack basic medical supplies and trained staff. Insecurity has hampered contact tracing and vaccination efforts, allowing the disease to jump from person to person more easily. The DRCโ€™s health infrastructure is already stretched thin by malaria, measles and other diseases, and the current outbreak threatens to overwhelm the system. The WHO declared the situation a public health emergency of international concern in December 2023, urging urgent support from international partners.

Health officials are now concentrating on three priorities: expanding the ringโ€‘vaccination campaign, improving surveillance and strengthening treatment centres. A new batch of vaccines has been delivered to the region, and teams are training local health workers to identify and isolate suspected cases quickly. The DRC government has also requested additional funding from the Global Health Security Agenda and the African Union to purchase personal protective equipment and secure more hospital beds. Meanwhile, neighbouring countries are monitoring the situation closely, fearing that the virus could cross borders into Uganda, Rwanda and South Sudan.

The next few weeks will be critical. If the vaccination drive can reach more people and the health system can isolate cases faster, the spread may slow. However, ongoing fighting in the area could stall progress. International donors are being asked to step up their financial commitments, and the WHO has called for a coordinated response that includes community engagement and transparent communication. The outcome of this effort will determine whether the death toll can be capped or whether the outbreak will continue to grow in a region already under severe strain.
