People riding e-bikes while drunk or dangerously could soon face on-the-spot fines under new government proposals aimed at reducing anti-social behavior. This crackdown comes as a response to growing concerns over safety, particularly for pedestrians, amid what officials describe as the "wild west" of e-biking regulations across the country. The consultation launched on Thursday seeks to establish national standards for e-bike usage, aiming to create safer streets for everyone.

The rise in e-bike popularity has led to a significant increase in usage, with 37 million trips taken on shared e-bikes in Greater London last yearโ€”an increase of one-third from the previous year. However, the rapid growth has highlighted a lack of cohesive regulations. While some areas have strict rules regarding where shared bikes can be parked, others are more lenient, leading to cluttered streets and safety hazards for pedestrians, including those with disabilities or young children.

Under the proposed regulations, companies that operate shared e-bike programs will be required to better manage their fleets, including providing designated parking areas. Additionally, operators may need to obtain insurance to cover potential accidents involving their bikes. The government is also considering empowering local authorities to enforce minimum standards and establish licensing for e-bike schemes, which would help integrate these vehicles into existing transport networks more effectively.

The consultation period will last for eight weeks, after which the government plans to draft legislation to implement the proposed changes. Transport Secretary Heidi Alexander noted that while the goal is to promote the growth of e-bike schemes, current issues must be addressed to ensure safety. Prime Minister Andy Burnham emphasized that this initiative is a "small but important everyday fix" to improve urban safety and reduce nuisances caused by reckless riding.
