Drew Brees unveiled his bronze Hall of Fame bust on Saturday in Canton, Ohio, with a little help from his former coach Sean Payton, marking the final milestone in a 20-year NFL career that reshaped the New Orleans Saints and the city they call home.

The ceremony capped a journey that began in West Lafayette, Indiana, where Brees was a lightly recruited quarterback before becoming a second-round pick in 2001. He arrived in New Orleans in 2006 after the Saints’ original plan to rebuild around Aaron Brooks collapsed in the wake of Hurricane Katrina. Brees, then a backup in San Diego, signed a six-year deal worth $60 million. He led the Saints to their first Super Bowl title in franchise history the following season, delivering a 31-17 win over Indianapolis in Super Bowl XLIV and earning MVP honors. Over 15 seasons in New Orleans, he threw for 7,075 yards in a single season twice, set nearly every Saints passing record, and became the NFL’s all-time leading passer when he retired after the 2020 season with 80,358 yards.

At the bust unveiling, Brees stood beside Payton as the bronze replica of his head was revealed. Payton, who coached Brees for 13 seasons before leaving in 2021, joked about Brees’ infamous work ethic and precision. “He had a routine that was so specific it was almost comical,” Payton said. The bust itself immortalizes Brees’ trademark high forehead and focused gaze, crafted by sculptor Scott Myers and cast in bronze at the Roman Bronze Works in New York. Brees, now an analyst for NBC’s “Football Night in America,” called it “a humbling reminder of the responsibility we have to the people who supported us.”

The bust will join those of 350 Hall of Famers in Canton, but its significance stretches beyond Canton. It stands as a symbol of New Orleans’ recovery and identity after Katrina, a monument to a player who stayed through injury, criticism, and the city’s deep attachment to him. Brees’ legacy isn’t just about numbers—he redefined what it meant to be a franchise quarterback in a small market, and his bust ensures that legacy will endure long after he’s done calling games on TV.
