South Carolina Republican voters are deciding Tuesday whether a famous last name beats experience in the crowded GOP Senate primary.

Darline Graham, a political newcomer whose husband, Rep. Trey Gowdy, is a former chairman of the House Oversight Committee, is facing veteran lawmaker Rep. William Timmons in a runoff after neither won enough votes in the June primary. Donald Trump has publicly backed Graham, calling her a โ€œproven conservativeโ€ despite her lack of electoral experience. The National Republican Senatorial Committee has also spent heavily on TV ads portraying her as a strong conservative alternative to Timmons, who has served in Congress since 2019. Polling ahead of the runoff shows the race is tight, with Graham holding a slight edge in name recognition and institutional support.

The contest highlights a growing divide in the Republican Party between establishment-backed candidates with deep donor networks and insurgent conservatives aligned with Trumpโ€™s movement. Grahamโ€™s campaign has leaned into her connection to Gowdy, a well-known figure in conservative media, while Timmons has positioned himself as a Washington insider with legislative experience. The runoff comes as South Carolina Republicans face pressure to unite behind a candidate who can take on Democratic Sen. Jim Clyburn in November, though the general election is considered safely Republican.

Outside groups have poured more than $1 million into the runoff, with the NRSC airing ads linking Timmons to the unpopular national GOP agenda, while allied PACs supporting Graham have framed her as a Trump-aligned outsider ready to fight for South Carolina. Early voting data suggests high turnout, with Grahamโ€™s campaign claiming momentum after Trumpโ€™s endorsement. Timmons has countered by warning that Graham lacks the experience to handle national security and economic issues, a message resonating with some establishment-aligned voters.

If Graham wins, she would face Clyburn in November with the backing of the GOP establishment and Trumpโ€™s movement. A Timmons victory would signal that incumbency and institutional power still carry more weight than celebrity endorsements. Either way, the runoff underscores how South Carolina Republicans are grappling with the same identity crisis facing the national party: whether to double down on Trump-style populism or return to a more traditional conservative brand.
