Nearly 14,000 cases of cyclospora have been confirmed in the U.S., according to the CDC. The agency released the figure on Wednesday. It is the highest number of cases reported in a single year. The spike shows the outbreak is spreading faster than before. It signals a growing public health problem.

Cyclospora is a tiny parasite that lives in contaminated water or soil. People get infected by eating raw or washed produce that has been exposed to dirty irrigation water or animal feces. The illness causes diarrhea, stomach cramps, fever, and can last weeks if untreated. It is especially dangerous for people with weak immune systems. The parasite spreads quickly when food is not properly cleaned or cooked.

The surge in cases follows a pattern of outbreaks linked to leafy greens, berries, and cilantro. No single source has been identified yet. The FDA is working with state health departments to trace the supply chain. Several recalls have already been issued for produce from Mexico and Central America. The CDC has issued a public warning urging consumers to wash produce thoroughly and cook it before eating. Health officials are monitoring the situation closely.

Investigators say the search for the source is still underway. They expect more cases as more people are exposed. The FDA will publish a report once the origin is determined. The outbreak highlights the need for better food safety
