In 2023, climate scientists reported that 580โฏmillion children under the age of ten worldwide are now exposed to at least 20 extra heatโstress days each year. Heatโstress days are defined as days when the maximum temperature reaches or exceeds 35โฏยฐC (95โฏยฐF). The study, published by Carbon Brief, shows a sharp rise in these days across every continent, with the largest increases in South Asia, SubโSaharan Africa, and the Middle East.
Heat stress harms children in many ways. It can cause dehydration, heat exhaustion, and even death. Chronic exposure limits outdoor play, reduces school attendance, and hampers learning because the brain struggles to function in extreme heat. Growth and immune systems are also at risk, making children more vulnerable to infections. The rise in heatโstress days is linked to the recordโhigh global temperatures of 2023, the hottest year on record, and the growing frequency of heatwaves.
The root cause is the continued emission of greenhouse gases. Carbon dioxide and methane trap heat in the atmosphere, pushing the planet toward a 2โฏยฐC rise and beyond. Urban heat islandsโcities that are hotter than surrounding rural areasโadd to the problem, especially where housing lacks insulation or ventilation. The Paris Agreement set a goal of limiting warming to 1.5โฏยฐC, but current pledges fall short, meaning more heatโstress days will be added if emissions stay unchecked.
Governments and NGOs are stepping up adaptation measures. Some schools in Bangladesh and Kenya now have solarโpowered fans and shaded study areas. Waterโdistribution projects aim to provide safe drinking water in hot regions. International donors are funding research into heatโtolerant crops and earlyโwarning systems. However, experts warn that without stronger mitigationโreducing emissions and protecting forestsโthese adaptation efforts will struggle to keep pace with the accelerating heat.
