Chevron announced on Wednesday that it will expand its operations in Venezuela, following a significant oil deal struck between the U.S. and Venezuela last week. The agreement allows the U.S. access to 65 billion barrels of oil, a move that is seen as pivotal for the energy sector in both countries.

The expansion will take place in the Orinoco Belt, which houses a substantial portion of Venezuela's oil reserves. U.S. Secretary of Energy Chris Wright emphasized the importance of this deal, stating, "The catalyst for transforming Venezuela is energy." He spoke at a press conference alongside Chevron CEO Mike Wirth and Venezuelan President Delcy Rodrรญguez, marking a new chapter for U.S.-Venezuelan relations in the oil industry.

Chevron, the largest foreign oil operator in Venezuela, plans to invest over $7 billion in a joint venture over the next five years. This investment is expected to ramp up production to about 600,000 barrels of oil per day. Wirth described the agreement as a significant milestone that reflects progress toward a more stable investment climate in Venezuela, which has faced political turmoil in recent years, especially following the capture of former President Nicolรกs Maduro in January.

This deal comes at a crucial time for Venezuela, a country rich in oil but marred by economic instability. While other U.S. oil companies like ExxonMobil have been hesitant to re-enter the Venezuelan market, citing concerns over investment safety, Chevron's commitment suggests a renewed interest in tapping into Venezuela's vast resources.
