ChatGPT subscribers can now open and edit Google Drive files from inside the chat. The AI platform, launched by OpenAI last year, has rolled out a deeper integration with Google Drive that lets users add documents to their ChatGPT Library and edit them without leaving the chat interface.

This move comes as the race between AI‑powered assistants intensifies. Google’s Bard and Microsoft’s Copilot have already tied their models to Office 365 and Google Workspace, making it easy for users to write, edit and collaborate on the fly. OpenAI’s new feature is a direct response to that trend, aiming to keep ChatGPT competitive in the productivity arena. By embedding Google Drive, the company is signalling that it sees document work as a core use case for conversational AI.

The integration works by connecting the user’s Google account to ChatGPT. Once authorized, files can be dragged into the chat or added via a new ‘Add to Library’ button. Users can then open a document in a split‑view mode, where the original file appears alongside a chat window. They can ask ChatGPT to rewrite a paragraph, suggest edits, or generate a summary, and the changes appear in real time. The feature supports Google Docs, Sheets, Slides, and PDFs, but it does not yet handle image‑heavy files or non‑text formats. OpenAI says the edit function uses the same fine‑tuned GPT‑4 model that powers the rest of the platform, and the data stays encrypted in Google’s infrastructure.
