Perpetual futures trading on centralized crypto exchanges dropped to $4โ€ฏtrillion in the last week, the lowest volume in 31 months and the lowest since late 2023. Decentralized platforms saw a similar decline, with their perpetual markets approaching a oneโ€‘year low. The drop was measured by CoinTelegraphโ€™s weekly volume tracker, which compares daily trading activity against the same period in the previous year.

The decline comes amid a broader slide in crypto market liquidity and a tightening regulatory environment. Over the past six months, Bitcoin and Ethereum have traded below their 52โ€‘week highs, and several major exchanges have faced increased scrutiny from regulators in the United States and Europe. Institutional investors, who once drove largeโ€‘scale futures trades, have pulled back after a series of highโ€‘profile fund failures and a tightening of margin requirements. The combination of lower asset prices and higher perceived risk has made traders wary of taking large positions in perpetual contracts, which are leveraged and carry significant exposure.

Volume figures show a 45โ€ฏ% drop from the previous week, with Bitcoinโ€™s perpetual contracts accounting for roughly 60โ€ฏ% of the total. The decline in trading activity has also reduced the depth of the order books, widening bidโ€‘ask spreads and increasing slippage for traders. Market analysts warn that lower liquidity could amplify price swings, especially during periods of stress. Some exchanges have responded by lowering fees to attract activity, while others are exploring new product offerings, such as regulated futures on stablecoins, to diversify their revenue streams.

If the trend continues, it could signal a shift toward a more cautious, riskโ€‘averse trading environment. Lower volumes may make it harder for traders to exit large positions without moving the market, potentially heightening volatility. Regulators may see the decline as evidence that market participants are taking the rules seriously, but they could also view the liquidity squeeze as a sign that the market is under strain. The next few weeks will be critical: a rebound in price or a regulatory announcement could quickly reverse the trend, while a continued slide could force exchanges to rethink their product mix and risk management strategies.
