Catholic and evangelical leaders today condemned a Texas government plan to publicly execute the Fortโ€ฏHood shooter, Nidalโ€ฏHasan, calling the move a moral affront. Governor Gregโ€ฏAbbott announced the proposal in a press briefing, saying the state would allow executions to be televised and open to the public. The plan has drawn sharp criticism from religious figures who argue that a public execution would erode the nationโ€™s moral fabric and leave a lasting stain on the conscience of the country.

The Fortโ€ฏHood shooting on Novemberโ€ฏ5,โ€ฏ2009, killed 13 people and injured 31. Hasan, a U.S. Army major, was convicted in federal court and sentenced to death in 2013. He now faces execution in the federal system, not the Texas system. Texas has 70 deathโ€‘row inmates, and the governorโ€™s proposal would be the first time an American state has considered making executions a public spectacle. The move is part of a broader debate over the death penalty, with proponents citing deterrence and punishment, while opponents raise questions about human dignity, wrongful convictions, and the stateโ€™s role in taking life.

Archbishop Paulโ€ฏS.โ€ฏCoakley issued a statement that the public execution โ€œwill only further undermine the moral fabric of our nation and be a blight on the conscience of its people.โ€ Evangelical leaders echoed his sentiment, urging the governor to reconsider the plan. โ€œPublic executions would normalize stateโ€‘sanctioned violence and undermine our shared values,โ€ one pastor said in a joint statement. The religious coalition also highlighted concerns about the psychological impact on witnesses and the potential for the spectacle to desensitize society to death.

The governorโ€™s proposal faces immediate legal hurdles. Texas lawmakers and civilโ€‘rights groups are preparing to challenge the plan in court, citing constitutional and humanโ€‘rights arguments. If the plan is blocked, it could set a precedent
